July Unemployment Numbers

The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services released Ohio’s unemployment numbers for July. After a long period of unemployment declines and early signs of a recovery, and despite a slight decrease in that national unemployment rate, Ohio saw an increase in unemployment of 2 tenths of a percent, increasing from 8.8% to 9%. This is the second month in a row in which Ohio’s unemployment rate has risen, following 22 straight months without an increase. This increase in unemployment adds 12,000 more workers to Ohio’s unemployment rolls. The sector experiencing the largest decline in employment was leisure and hospitality, with a decrease of 6500. Continuing with the trends from June, and likely due to major budget cuts to local government in Governor Kasich’s budget, local governments saw a decrease of 4700 jobs.  Additionally health and educational services experienced a decrease of 2900 jobs. Other items of note:
  • The number of unemployed workers increased from to 529,000 from 517,000 in June.
  • Overall Non-agriculture Wage and Salary Employment saw an increase of 6,500 jobs over the month. This small increase is not enough to keep pace with the number of people searching for jobs.
  • Local Government saw a decrease of 4700 jobs.
  • The manufacturing sector saw an increase of 7900 jobs. The auto industry continues to be a bright spot, with major announcements from Chrysler.
  • May’s reported non-agriculture wage and salary employment increase of 12,000 jobs has been revised to reflect an increase of only 3000 jobs.
  • June’s reported non-agriculture wage and salary employment increase of 10,600 jobs has been revised to reflect and increase of 10,900 jobs.
  • The US unemployment rate decreased from 9.2% in June to 9.1% in July
