ABJ Editorial: Mystery of the $176 million
On Saturday, the Akron Beacon Journal editorial page noted what Innovation Ohio has already reported: that by stubbornly refusing $176 million in federal funds in exchange for modest changes to modernize the state’s unemployment compensation system, Governor Kasich actually acted against the recommendation of his own agency.
In a May memo, the Department of Job and Family Services suggested that the state make “modest” changes in order to make the system “more equitable” and “more responsive” to the jobless. Even in the face of unemployment that has crept upwards for the past two months in a row, Kasich declined.
